But are most of us even aware that such a day exists and how it affects us?
The U.S and Canada began to Celebrate Data Privacy Day on 28th of January. Four years down the line this day is celebrated for everyone as Data Privacy Day. The National Cyber Security Alliance headed the Data Privacy Day. The National Cyber Security Alliance is a non-profit public private partnership which focuses on educating all online citizens on cyber security education.
Twitter released its second Transparency report, highlighting copyright notices, information requests and information removal requests. It can be assumed that the government’s requests to the user account information mostly in the investigations connected to criminal cases are on the rise. In this report, Twitter has stated the United States government had around 815 requests and Twitter has given information in almost 69 percent of the cases.
The total number of user information requests from around the world in 2012 according to Twitter is 1,009. The U.S. government had the highest number of requests in the first and the second half of 2012 as compared to the other governments of the world
The other countries with more than requests in the second half are: Brazil had around thirty four requests, Japan had sixty two. Twitter complied with combined requests of around fifty seven percent from all the other governments of the world.
According to Google’s recent transparency data, the requests for user data requests are much higher.
The companies are making efforts to protect the privacy of their users in a better manner. However, through these transparency reports, we are at least aware of how and what the government can access.
The Data Privacy Day is to make an effort in enabling people in protecting their privacy of their online data. It is important to be aware and be cautious with the data that other people have shared with us and proactively protect the same.
